Traditional Braces

There’s a reason traditional metal braces have remained the most common orthodontic treatment for decades. Braces are a tried-and-true way to straighten crooked, crowded or misaligned teeth, as well as correct any kind of bite imperfections. Traditional braces have also progressed with current technological advancements, so patients are receiving sleeker, more comfortable braces than in years past.

At Precision Orthodontics, we’re proud to serve the Cleveland and Youngstown areas with affordable braces for kids and adults alike. Braces have helped countless patients gain confidence, and yours could be next!

Are Metal Braces Right for Me?

While they’re not the only option out there, metal braces are the classic solution to imperfect teeth. Everybody is different, however, so there are a few things to consider if you’re debating metal braces for yourself or your child.

Benefits of Metal Braces

  • Cost. Metal braces are oftentimes the most affordable option for straightening teeth.
  • Control. Sometimes, metal braces are the only solution for extreme cases of overcrowding. Metal braces give your orthodontist total control over the way your teeth shift.
  • Durability. Metal braces are the strongest type of traditional braces. Whereas plastic and ceramic braces are more of a liability, it’s difficult to damage metal braces.
  • Style. You can choose from a variety of colors when you wear metal braces. This can be used as an expression of self, or just a way to make your orthodontic treatment fun!
  • Can’t lose them. Unlike clear aligners, it’s impossible to misplace your metal braces. This is a big benefit to consider, especially for younger children or teens.

Common Treatment Concerns

  • Discomfort. Metal braces can sometimes be uncomfortable as your mouth adjusts to the hardware. Not often, but wires can become loose and cause painful poking.
  • Hygiene. Keeping your mouth clean with braces requires extra diligence, like using floss threaders and brushing after meals.
  • Food limitations. There are some foods that are off-limits with braces, such as chewing gum, caramel candy, and anything else that gets stuck in teeth easily.
  • Appearance. Metal braces are the most noticeable form of treatment.

Metal Braces vs. Clear Aligners

There are plenty of things to consider when you’re choosing the best route to a straighter smile. Many people are stuck deciding between braces and clear aligners. There’s no wrong choice, but there are pros and cons to both Invisalign and braces. Here are a few key comparisons:

  • Braces usually take 12 to 18 months or longer to complete, while aligners can take as little as six months but up to two years.
  • Invisalign is removable by the patient, whereas braces are not.
  • Braces require special floss threaders.
  • Invisalign users need to brush and soak aligners regularly, as well as brush teeth more often.
  • Braces patients visit the orthodontist once a month or every other month, while patients with aligners typically visit less often.
  • Braces are typically more cost-effective than aligners.
